First Quarter School-Wide Book: The Day You Begin by Jaqueline Woodson:
In addition to our monthly Kindness Themes we will also have a school-wide book each quarter that will be read aloud in each classroom that not only supports our monthly Kindness Themes but also incorporates one of the Social Justice Anchor Standards {Identity, Diversity, Justice & Action}. We are learning and recognizing that we need to not only emphasize kindness but also find ways to create safe learning spaces and environments where our student's stories are not only recognized but honored, studied and loved!

Summary of the book: Everyone feels they don’t belong sometimes. Maybe you look different from other children in your class. Maybe you like different games or food. Maybe you come from a different country and no one seems just like you. It’s sometimes hard, but it’s also an opportunity to learn about yourself and to teach others about your world. You just have to begin.
